I went with a friend to watch horseracing at Santa Anita Park. I don’t know anything about horseracing, so I looked at the horses’ names for a sign to choose the winner. My friend calls that a “wise guy bet.” Horseracing isn’t the only time I use the wise guy bet to make decisions. And not just for little things like a $2 bet, but for big things like deciding which house to buy because I like the name of the street. When making a decision, and all things seem equal, seeing signs in a name and making a wise guy bet is as good a method as any.

I use the “wise guy bet” all the time too, but never knew it was called that. I see signs in names, dates, times, even memories. I agree, all things being equal, it’s my natural way.

Even I — a reformed racetrack betting junkie with a lot of complicated methods to pick winners — would sometimes place a wise guy bet because I couldn’t dismiss a name that seemed to be a sign for me! One of my favorite wise guy bets was named Happy Camper, who ran just before I went on a much anticipated camping trip to Yellowstone. He won and I cashed a nice win bet!
