Usually, divorce is contentious. But every now and again you’ll hear a story like Elvis Presley serenading Priscilla with I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton as they left divorce court hand in hand. On their divorce day, my friend and her husband didn’t have time for breakfast, so after divorce court decided to go across the street to the mall and grab a slice of pizza. The guy taking their pizza order noticed how happy they were and asked if they were on a first date. They explained that this was their last date. The ex-couple ate their pizza, said goodbye and life went on. About 15 years later, my friend and her new husband were bored on a rainy day, and he suggested they go walk around the mall. She didn’t bother changing out of her sweatpants, fixing her hair that was in a sloppy ponytail or applying lipstick. At the mall, her husband said he felt like having a slice of pizza, and she remembered the last time she was there 15 years ago. Her husband decided that he’d rather have a chicken sandwich, so they moved to the other side of the food court. As they were paying for their order, my friend turned around and who did she see? “You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” her husband said. “The ghost of husbands past,” she thought. She hurried to sit down and told her current husband that her ex-husband was in the line behind them with his date. She wasn’t sure if her ex-husband would come over and say hi and was relieved when he didn’t. Who wants to see their ex wearing sweats and no lipstick! So, what is the sign in this circumstance? My friend began to think she conjured her ex by thinking of him at the pizza counter. Watching her past collide with her present could be a coincidence, but she took it as a sign that she did the right thing in moving on and doing it with no hard feelings.
