Someone told me that my signs are just superstitions. That person also stood beside me at Trevi Fountain in Rome, handed me a euro and said, “Make a wish and throw the coin over your left shoulder into the fountain.” (And I’m superstitious!) People initially threw money into fountains or wishing wells as an offering to the gods for providing fresh water. Along the way, offerings became personal wishes. I can’t remember my wish that day but tossing a coin into Trevi Fountain means there’s another trip to Rome in my future. I sure hope so. In the meantime, I’m happy that coins tossed into fountains are collected and usually given to charity. In 2019, it was estimated that more than 3,000 euros were tossed into the Trevi Fountain every day. That’s more than $1 million a year going to help poor and homeless people in Rome. The money tossed into wishing wells at Disneyland and other Disney Parks is donated to children’s charities. Even if a wish doesn’t come true, superstitions are paying off.
