I remember model Lauren Hutton telling me that wearing red lipstick was how ladies of the evening in ancient Greece advertised their special services. Red lipstick has been a sign for many things over its long history. In Cleopatra’s time, red lipstick became a status symbol worn by the Queen of Egypt. Another queen centuries later, Queen Elizabeth I had a fondness for red lipstick, even though the church disapproved, she felt it had magical healing powers. In the early 1900s, red lipstick was a sign of the American suffragette movement symbolizing power, strength and daring as women fought for the right to vote. By the 1940s, women were wearing red lipstick as a show of patriotism for the Allies in World War II. And it was an added bonus that Adolf Hitler hated red lipstick. Today, red lipstick is a symbol of femininity, empowerment, confidence, rebellion, sexuality, passion and whatever sign the wearer wants you to see.
