A few days ago, I looked out my back window and noticed something new growing in my garden. A little bouquet of pretty yellow flowers was nestled among the English ivy ground cover. Yellow flowers are said to bring joy, and these certainly did. I immediately wondered, are these cheerful yellow flowers a sign? A sign of what? My new, free flowers are called Bermuda buttercup, and they are considered a problem! The Bermuda buttercup was a gift from a bird, squirrel, gopher or other wild animal that brought a bulb from somewhere else and dropped it off in my ivy. While the lovely yellow flower is an invasive weed in California, it is endangered in its native South Africa. (How does something fast spreading and difficult to eradicate become endangered?) Even though it’s called a nuisance, Bermuda buttercup has good qualities too. It’s edible with a lemony flavor that makes a tasty and colorful complement to a salad. In addition to being a sign for joy, cheerfulness and friendship, Bermuda buttercup symbolizes endurance and resilience. Until the Bermuda buttercup starts overtaking my home, I’ll consider it a sign of spreading happiness. Do you have seeing signs stories to share? Email seeingsignsblog@gmail.com and let us know.

Some people are afraid of weeds, but if it wasn’t for weeds, I wouldn’t have anything to mow!
