In the late 1970s, John Lennon wrote a song and recorded it onto a cassette tape that he marked “Now + Then.” He didn’t know it then, but decades later — with the help of AI — it would become the last Beatles song. In 1995, the three remaining Beatles got together to work on the song but because the cassette tape quality was horrible, George Harrison didn’t like it and the project was scrapped. However, Paul McCartney didn’t forget the song. If you remember the Carl Perkins story about a song he wrote for Paul called “My Old Friend,” you’ll understand why Paul had a passion to finish “Now and Then.” In 2021, Paul sent the tape to Peter Jackson the director of “The Beatles: Get Back” who used technology to lift John’s voice. In addition, Paul McCartney added lyrics creating a final Lennon-McCartney collaboration. Next, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney went into the studio to complete the song using recordings of their deceased band mates. When the song was released — probably to dispel any negativity regarding George Harrison’s previous reservations about the song — his wife Olivia sent a press release stating she thought George would have joined Paul and Ringo in completing the song. Olivia Harrison felt confident that George would approve of “Now and Then” because she had a sign. In 1997, George bought an artsy clock made of recycled materials and placed it in his cottage. After George passed away in 2001, Olivia would see the clock in the cottage and noticed the battery had died. She always told herself that she needed to change the battery and move the clock into the main house and in 2022, she finally did. As she was placing the clock on the mantel, Paul McCartney called to let her know about the new song “Now and Then.” At that moment, Olivia was looking right at George’s prized clock, keeping time once again, with the word “NOW” above a plus sign created by a domino flanked by two buttons and underneath that the word “THEN.” There was a small photo on the clock that Olivia replaced with a photograph of the young Beatles. After 50 years and the passing of John and George, the Beatles are still connected and communicating.

I remember the Carl Perkins story. This story makes that one even more believable. Music is a gift from God and all the Beatles were blessed.
