Some people consider that seeing signs is similar to magical thinking. I’ve read that knocking on wood and other ritual behaviors are deemed magical thinking and are signs of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). I never considered my favorite superstition as a cognitive issue but, I confess, I knock wood a lot. I’m not alone, people in many cultures knock wood or touch wood to bring good luck or avoid bad luck. One theory as to how knocking on wood started is that back in pagan times, people believed trees were inhabited by gods. Knocking on a tree would let the gods know you wanted a little assist with your desire and that you were grateful. Another theory is that knocking on wood was a way to block evil spirits so they couldn’t hear you talking about your good fortune and ruin things for you. Christians may associate knocking on wood with protection, as wood is mentioned in the Bible to build Noah’s Ark and make the crucifix. I never analyze why I’m knocking wood when I do it. Although, I know it’s a compulsion because I’ll knock my head when not near a wooden table, door or tree. Positive thinking and visualizing getting what you want can be powerful tools and I consider knocking wood on par with that. Whether knocking wood is due to OCD or not, I’m crossing my fingers that it’s all good.
