My friend found a penny the other day and wondered if that was good luck or bad luck. Well, heads up, pick it up. That’s good luck for the whole day according to the saying, “Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck.” Some may consider a penny on tails a bad penny. It’s thought that the head side has positive energy because it has a face, and tails is negative because it’s the opposite side. Instead of picking up a penny on tails, you’re supposed to turn it over for the next person to find. Paying good luck forward, if you will. There’s the pennywise tradition of putting the copper coin in the bride’s shoe on her wedding day for a lifetime of wealth and good fortune for the couple. Another shoe/penny connection is the Penny Loafer. The leather Penny Loafer shoe came out in the 1930s and was designed with a split slot on the upper that fit a penny. The wearer had a little extra flash and was lucky to have a penny for a pay phone back in the day. A truly lucky penny is when you associate a found penny with a lost loved one — a little hello from beyond — or pennies from heaven. While the saying “a penny for your thoughts” doesn’t sound like much now, it was worth a lot over 500 years ago when Sir Thomas More wrote the phrase in 1522. Pennies have stood the test of time and transcended their one-cent status.

I had a pair of Penny Loafers in my childhood, with a penny in the space for extra bling. I still like finding a penny, and feel it’s good luck . . . I’ll take all I can get! 😀
I’m with you on the good luck. And don’t you think Penny Loafers should make a comeback?
