Last weekend at the hair salon, in flew a black-chinned hummingbird. At first, I was apprehensive that the little hummingbird might be hurt and next because I wasn’t sure if it was a good sign or bad sign. Since there were six of us in the salon, I wondered if the symbolism would apply to all of us. The salon owner and assistant were trying to figure out how to get the hummingbird safely out — first, searching online for tips, then turning off all the lights and then rigging a plastic bag on the end of a broom like a net. Considering a black-chinned hummingbird’s heart beats more than 480 beats per minute at rest, I wondered how many beats this poor hummingbird was clocking while being chased by a plastic bag. After a couple minutes, the hummingbird was surprisingly captured and released without further incident. So, was this hummingbird visit a good omen or bad omen? While Italians believe a bird flying inside is a sign someone will die, most online sources say a hummingbird flying inside brings joy, good luck and healing. Good news! I wondered about the women in the salon with me and if any of them were hoping for a positive change in the course of their lives, or if someone needed physical or emotional healing or if they wished for a message from a loved one who passed away. Generally, when someone asks me what a sign means, I ask, “What does it mean to you?” I didn’t believe that the black-chinned hummingbird was a sign for me, but I hoped someone received a positive message that they were needing. Given the eruption of applause and cheers when the little hummingbird was safely outside, the joy of helping the tiny hummingbird felt like good luck for all of us, especially for that wayward, black-chinned hummingbird.
